Lavizan Bird Garden

Lavizan Bird Garden, located in north-east of the city (Lavizan jungles) is about 80 hectares big which can be the biggest bird garden in the world. 20 hectares of this garden is specified to serve as birds’ habitat and the remainder 60 hectares are going to make a great recreational area for the citizens. One of the most magnificent sites of this garden is the water birds' cage which is designed by Diba Tensile Architecture and Engineered by Maffeis Engineering and Consulting. This irregular gigantic cable net structure has dimensions of about 400x150 m planar as shown in the picture below.

 

 

The Structure and the Cable-net

The Bird Garden structure is made by a cable net with a span of approximately 2 meters, supported in the internal part by main cables fixed on the top of twelve steel masts (average height=40 m). These enormous masts are designed so they can bear the loads imposed on them.

 

 


Along the border, there is a system of columns, back cables and steel bars. In general, this tremendous structure uses about 3000 meters of FLC cables including main cables, column back cables and border cables, and also about 31000 meters of OSS cables which cross the main cables to form the cable net, all provided by Redaelli Tecna Spa which is one the world's famous companies in producing wire ropes. 

Over the cable net is fixed a net for the birds, 72000 square meters of these fine net is provided by ttm Rossi which is expert in manufacturing steel meshes.

 

 

Engineering

Maffeis Engineering team modeled the Bird Garden net structure. Form finding of the cable net has been drawn with the software developed by Maffeis office.
In the design of this massive structure the engineers considered the project proper dimensions and the topography of the surrounding terrain to take into account the effect of the hilly surface on wind turbulence field. In the picture below is shown the CFD analysis of the structure.
 

 

 

For the design of the steel elements, the maximum forces acting to the top of the columns has been applied to the final 3D model of the columns and connections, to check that all the plates are within the stress limits.


Construction and Installation

At the moment the structure is under constructions. All the cables have been manufactured and are ready to be shipped to Iran. So far 1/3 of the middle masts has been installed. We predict that by the end of this year (according to Iranian calender) this structure will have been fully installed and opened to the public.
